Captains Andy and Rich hook up with Captain Freddy Gamboa of Andreas' Toy Charters (732-672-1561).  They brave 6-8ft seas, 40 degree water temps, 30 degree air temps to travel offshore to the Hudson Canyon in pursuit of golden tilefish.  Despite the very tough conditions they catch many fish to 20lbs and experience this very unique fishery. The techniques in this show can be used by anyone who wants to target these little known fish anywhere in the region.  If you have questions about any of the equipment used during the show, please contact us or  send us a message
The rod and reel combo  featured a Shimano 20N Torsa reel on a 6'6" Trevala rod rated for 50-100lb (model TVC66-MH).  This outfit is typically used for butterfly jigging but, is also a great outfit for fishing Tilefish (and Cod).  The reel is fast and powerful, and it makes bringing up a fish from the extreme depths reasonably quick.

The reel loaded with 65lb Berkley Big Game Braid which is attached to a 3ft length of 50lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a Mustad Rolling Swivel.

The rig was a simple hi-lo rig that with a standoff drop loops at one foot above the sinker and again at three feet above the sinker.  A standard 12-24oz bank sinker was used to ensure the rig was on the bottom.  The dropper loops were threaded through 7/0 Mustad Beak Baitholder hooks and clam baits soaked in Mustad Activate Bait Enhancer were used.   The bait enhancer was particularly effective because tilefish rely very heavily on scent to find food in the extreme depths.

The Frabill net seen on this show was model 8410 - 26"x30" PowerCatch Landing Net (Tangle-free knotless – 36” deep)
The large heavy mesh size (1 3/4”) makes this a good net for striped bass, cod, bluefish, etc. This net can handle bunker spoons (which will destroy lighter mesh) and resists bluefish teeth.

Another choice would be model 8415 26"x30" PowerCatch Landing Net (tangle-free weighted – 38” deep).  The mesh size (1 1/2”) makes this a good net for striped bass, cod, etc. The mesh has less water resistance than the tangle-free knotless, but can be damaged by bunker spoons and bluefish teeth.

The boat used was a 28ft Triton powered by twin 300hp Mercury Verados.  This boat is the real deal. With a deep-v hull and sharp entry, this boat will knife through big seas that would leave most boats back at the dock.  The deck layout makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore, plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor.  Click here to learn more about this incredible boat and the gear and Raymarine electronics used on this boat. LoadRite supplied the tandem axel roller trailed used to haul the boat.  This trailer made launching and recovery a breeze and provided a real sense of security on the road.  Click here to locate the LoadRite dealer nearest to you.
