Captains Andy and Rich
join their good friend professional angler Paul Michele to experience
the monster striped bass bite in Great South Bay along the Fire Island
beaches. The guys snag and hold live bunker in the schools and
land too many big stripers to count up to 35lbs. The techniques in
this show can be used by anyone working bunker schools in either the
spring or fall. If you have questions about any of the
equipment used during the show, please contact us
or send us a message.

The spinning rod and reel combo
used for snagging bunker and holding them in the schools featured a
Shimano
Spheros 8000 reel on a
7'
Teramar rod rated for 15-30lb (model TMSF70H). This is a
very versatile spinning outfit and is perfect for snagging bunker or
throwing big poppers and swimmers. The
conventional rod and reel combo used for eel fishing features a
Shimano
Torium 20 reel on a
Tallus conventional rod (model
TLC-70MHA). This is a
very versatile conventional outfit and is perfect for nearly all northeast
bunker fishing applications.
The spinning reel is loaded with
30lb Berkley Fireline Crystal which is attached to a 3ft length of
50lb
Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a
#10 Mustad Rolling Swivel. The small profile of the swivel virtually
eliminates any chance of picking up debris. A large snap was
tied to end of the leader using a clinch knot. The snap was
attached to an un- weighted 10/0 Mustad treble hook.
The conventional reel was loaded with
30lb
Berkley Big
Game which is attached to a 4ft length of
80lb Yo-Zuri
Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a
#10 Mustad Rolling Swivel. The rig is completed with a
8/0
Mustad Ultrapoint Beak Bait style hook. This is an incredibly
sharp hook and is the most effective hook when using large live baits,
whole dead baits, or chunk baits.
Many times these big stripers can be found working the
flats or busting bait on the surface. The most effective lures
are 6" (1 3/8oz)
Yo-Zuri
Surface Cruiser and
Hydro Pencil plugs. Both plugs are easy to work, have tremendous
casting distance, and draw dramatic strikes from the fish.
A
swimming lure can also be used and the 6 1/2" (1 3/8oz)
Yo-Zuri
Crystal Minnow Magnum is a prefect imitation of
the large baitfish found in the Northeast. Several of the
patterns exactly mimic a herring or bunker in action, size, and color. The
weight and shape of the lure make it perfect for both boat and surf
applications and it can handle any size fish from schoolies
to trophies.

The
Frabill net seen on this show
was model 8410 - 26"x30" PowerCatch Landing Net (Tangle-free knotless –
36” deep)
The large heavy mesh size (1 3/4”) makes this a good net for striped
bass, cod, bluefish, etc. This net can handle bunker spoons (which will
destroy lighter mesh) and resists bluefish teeth.
Another choice would be model 8415 26"x30" PowerCatch
Landing Net (tangle-free weighted – 38” deep). The mesh size (1
1/2”) makes this a good net for striped bass, cod, etc. The mesh has
less water resistance than the tangle-free knotless, but can be damaged
by bunker spoons and bluefish teeth.

| The boat used was a 22ft Triton
powered by a 250hp Mercury Verado. This boat is the real deal.
With a deep-v hull and sharp entry, this boat will knife through a chop
that would leave most boats back at the dock. The deck layout
makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore,
plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor. .
