Captains Andy and Rich head up to Newport, RI to get in on a red hot blackfish bite with Captain Mike Neto of the Adrianna Charters (401-573-3474). For this trip they left their heavy blackfish tackle home and went light for an old fashioned "head to head" charter captain showdown. The bite was non-stop and they caught way too many big blackfish to count. Some of the fish were over 10lbs! The rod and reel combo seen on the show featured a Shimano Calcutta 400S reel on a Shimano 7' Teramar conventional (casting) rod rated for 15-30lb (model TMC-X70MH). This is a very versatile conventional outfit and is perfect for choice for blackfish when using sinker weights less than 6 ounces.

We recommend a reel loaded with 30lb Berkley Big Game Braid which is attached to a 4ft length of 50lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a 130lb SPRO Power Swivel. The small profile of the swivel virtually eliminates any chance of picking up debris.

The rig we recommend consists of a dropper loop 6" above a loop that is passed through the eye of a 3-4oz bank sinker. A 12" length of 50lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader tipped with a 4/0 Mustad Ultrapoint Beak Bait style hook. This is an incredibly sharp hook and is very effective at penetrating the tough mouths of blackfish.

All the tackle used on Northeast Angling is stored in Ameripack tackle systems. The Backpack Tackle system is used to get the tackle to the fish! All the rods and reels are transported using the Rod Pods and the Reel Locker. They insure that everything makes it to the shoot in perfect condition. The raging current made the net choice especially critical. A Frabill Powercatch net with it's extendable handle was used and ensured that none of the fish were lost at boat-side. This is a a great net that stores easily and all you have to do is slide, lock and load and it is ready to go!

The boat used was a 2895CC Triton powered by twin 250hp Mercury Verados. This boat is the real deal. With a deep-v hull and sharp entry, the 2895 will knife through big seas that would leave most boats back at the dock. The deck layout makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore, plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor. The Automatic Adjusting Marker Buoy used during the show was provided by Skimmer Outdoors. This is a reliable, easy to use marker that remains in place after setting. Traditional markers used a fixed sinker line which might either be too short to reach the bottom or might become entangled in the propeller. The Automatic Adjusting Marker Buoy automatically releases the necessary line for the depth and also avoids line entanglement.
