Capt Andy and Rich hooked up with the legendary Capt Jimmy George of the Nicole Marie (631-831-3217). Capt Jimmy has caught more 50lb+ stripers than nearly everyone else. He created the revolutionary Secret Spoon and spent the day teaching Capt Andy and Capt Rich how to use the spoons to target trophy stripers. Despite the fact that no one was catching fish in Montauk at the time, the spoons still produced a bunch of monster bass including one fish just under 50lbs. The outfits used consisted of a Shimano Tekota 700 reels on 8' Tallus wire line rods (model TLCW80MHA). These rods are designed specifically for spoon fishing and wire line.

The reels were loaded with 40lb Monel wire. 80lb Berkley Big Game Braid can also be used but does not have quite the same sink rate. A 10ft leader of 80 lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader was attached directly to the wire using an Albright knot or an 80lb SPRO Power Swivel. All the tackle used on Northeast Angling is stored in Ameripack tackle systems. The Backpack Tackle system is used to get the tackle to the fish! All the rods and reels are transported using the Rod Pods and the Reel Locker. They insure that everything makes it to the shoot in perfect condition. The raging current made the net choice especially critical. A Frabill Powercatch net with it's extendable handle was used and ensured that none of the fish were lost at boat-side. This is a a great net that stores easily and all you have to do is slide, lock and load and it is ready to go!

The boat used was a 2895CC Triton powered by twin 250hp Mercury Verados. This boat is the real deal. With a deep-v hull and sharp entry, the 2895 will knife through big seas that would leave most boats back at the dock. The deck layout makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore, plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor.
