Capt Andy and Rich hooked up with good friend Capt Bill Brown (860 741-3301).  There hope was to find some early season tuna.  However, the tuna proved elusive and instead they ran into piles of big mahi.  They broke out the light tackle and landed dozens of fish.  The techniques and tackle used in this show can be used by anyone who comes across these tough fighting fish while fishing the offshore waters.  If you have questions about any of the equipment used during the show, please contact us or  send us a message
The rod and reel combo seen on the show featured a Shimano Spheros 5000 reel on a 7' Trevala (model TVS70-ML) rod rated for 20-50lb braided and fused lines.  It is a very versatile rod that was originally designed for butterfly jigging but is the perfect rod for the offshore angler.  This rod is sensitive enough to throw small bucktails for mahi, yet tough enough to handle bluefin tuna on butterfly jigs.

We recommend a reel loaded with 30lb Berkley Fireline Crystal which is attached to a 3ft length of 30lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a Mustad Rolling Swivel. The fluoro is critical in the crystal clear water when trying to catch these sharp eyed fish..

The rig is topped off with a 1/2oz HookUp ST Series Bucktail in either white or chartreuse tipped with a white or pink Berkley Gulp Alive Swimming Mullet.  The bucktail is also very effective with a strip of squid.

All the tackle used on Northeast Angling is stored in Ameripack tackle systems.  The Backpack Tackle system is used to get the tackle to the fish!  All the rods and reels are transported using the Rod Pods and the Reel Locker.  They insure that everything makes it to the shoot in perfect condition.  Their versatile Fly Boxes are also used for bucktails and rigs.

The raging current made the net choice especially critical.  A Frabill Powercatch net with it's extendable handle was used and ensured that none of the fish were lost at boat-side.  This is a a great net that stores easily and all you have to do is slide, lock and load and it is ready to go!
The boat used was a 2895CC Triton powered by twin 250hp Mercury Verados.  This boat is the real deal. With a deep-v hull and sharp entry, the 2895 will knife through big seas that would leave most boats back at the dock.  The deck layout makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore, plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor.  Click here to learn more about this incredible boat or click here to learn about the gear and Raymarine electronics on this boat.
LoadRite supplied the tandem axel roller trailed used to haul the boat.  This trailer made launching and recovery a breeze and provided a real sense of security on the road.  Click here to locate the LoadRite dealer nearest to you.
