Andy and Rich pay a visit to Capt Tom Pitasi of Coastal Fishing Charters (203) 943-6738 to get in on the spring run of stripers and blues.  The guys break out the light spinning tackle and the fly rods and enjoy a no-stop bite along the scenic Watch Hill beaches.  The fish put their light tackle to the test and make for an incredible day of fishing! If you have questions about any of the equipment used during the show, please contact us or  send us a message.
The rod and reel combo we recommend features a Shimano Stradic 4000FH reel on a 7' Clarus rod rated for 10-20lb (model CSS-FL70M).  This is a very versatile spinning outfit and is perfect for northeast plugging.  The rod has enough sensitivity to pass even the slightest bump along to the angler, yet enough strength to handle even the biggest fish.

We recommend a reel loaded with 14lb Berkley Fireline which is attached to a 3ft length of 30lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a 80lb SPRO Power Swivel.

The rig was topped off with either a 1/2 ounce SPRO Bucktail Jig tipped with a white Exude Saltwater Curly Tail Grub or a Yo-Zuri 5 1/4" sinking Crystal Minnow (model F11) in either black/silver or silver bronze.  The jig was particularly effective when fishing in depths of greater than 10 feet, while the minnow was perfect for fishing in the rocks and shallows.

The fly fishing outfits used by Rich and Tom consisted of a G-Loomis Syncrotech GL8-9-10 reel on a 9wt three piece Cross Current fly rod.  The reel features a cork disk drag, a quick release machined spool, and a large arbor for fast retrieves.  This combo is the perfect outfit for stripers and blues.
The fly reels were loaded with 9wt Orvis Striper Wonderline Advantage and knotless Mirage 9ft/12lb knotless tapered leaders.  A variety of Orvis saltwater flies were used including Clousers, Peanut Butter, Cowen's Baitfish, and Lefty's Deceiver, Skipping Bugs, and Gummy Minnows.
All the tackle used on Northeast Angling is stored in Ameripack tackle systems.  The Backpack Tackle system is used to get the tackle to the fish!  All the rods and reels are transported using the Rod Pods and the Reel Locker.  They insure that everything makes it to the shoot in perfect condition.  Their versatile Fly Boxes are also used for bucktails and rigs.

The raging current made the net choice especially critical.  A Frabill Powercatch net with it's extendable handle was used and ensured that none of the fish were lost at boat-side.  This is a a great net that stores easily and all you have to do is slide, lock and load and it is ready to go!
The boat used was a 2286CC Triton powered by a 250hp Mercury Verado.  This boat is the real deal. With a deep-v hull and sharp entry, the 2286 will knife through a chop that would leave most boats back at the dock.  The deck layout makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore, plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor.  Click here to learn more about this incredible boat or click here to learn about the gear and Raymarine electronics on this boat.
LoadRite supplied the tandem axel roller trailed used to haul the boat.  This trailer made launching and recovery a breeze and provided a real sense of security on the road.  Click here to locate the LoadRite dealer nearest to you.
Accommodations were provided by the Hilton Mystic which offers leisure and business travelers modern elegance amidst the rich traditions of colonial Mystic. It is located right in in the heart of Mystic's attractions and only minutes away from the fishing. It is a convenient coastal stopping point between New York and Boston, the Mystic area is alive with the historic charm of maritime New England.  The hotel had everything we needed including a bar and an excellent restaurant.
Capt Andy and Rich wear polarized sunglasses supplied by Azores Eyewear.  Finally someone has come out with a premium sunglass line at a reasonable price (less than $80).  The polarized lenses eliminate glare and allows anglers to spend long hours on the water without having to worry about headaches and eyestrain.  All models have 100% UVA and UVB protection.  Never settle for anything else.  No angler should be without these  glasses.
