Andy and Rich travel south to hook up with Captain Brian Rice of Jersey Devil Charters (732) 996-6372) for some great spring striper action in Raritan Bay and under the Verrazano Narrows bridge. The fish were all caught on chunks in depths over 35ft. The action is continuous and they land several big fish up to 30lbs! The rod and reel combo seen on the show featured a Shimano Torium 20 reel on a Tallus conventional rod (model TLC-70MHA). This is a very versatile conventional outfit and is perfect for nearly all northeast live lining and chunking applications. We recommend a reel loaded with 30lb Berkley Big Game which is attached to a 3ft length of 50lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a 130lb SPRO Power Swivel. The rig is completed with a 9/0 Mustad Ultrapoint Beak Bait style hook. This is an incredibly sharp hook and is the most effective hook when using large live baits, whole dead baits, or chunk baits. An egg sinker ranging from 2-4oz is positioned above the swivel. This makes sure that the rig gets to the desired depth.

All the tackle used on Northeast Angling is stored in Ameripack tackle systems. The Backpack Tackle system is used to get the tackle to the fish! All the rods and reels are transported using the Rod Pods and the Reel Locker. They insure that everything makes it to the shoot in perfect condition. The raging current made the net choice especially critical. A Frabill Powercatch net with it's extendable handle was used and ensured that none of the fish were lost at boat-side. This is a a great net that stores easily and all you have to do is slide, lock and load and it is ready to go!

The boat used was a 2486CC Triton powered by twin 150hp Mercury Optimax engines. This boat is one tough customer. With a deep-v hull and sharp entry the 2486 can handle almost anything the northeast can dish out. The deck layout makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore, plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor.
