The August 19 visit to the historic Stellwagen Bank of the coast of Massachusetts was quite successful.  Andy and Rich's guest, Capt. John Walker, showed what it takes to target monster Cod in the deep water.  Calm seas, perfect conditions and a steady bite made for an unforgettable day.   Most of the fishing was done on the east side of the bank in depths from 200 to 300 feet.  All of the fish were of legal size and several of the fish were in the 30-40lb class.  There was also a nice mix of Ling, some huge Cusk, and legal size Pollack.  a If you have questions about any of the equipment used during the show, please contact us or  send us a message
The outfit used consisted of the new Shimano Torium 30 reel on a 7' MH Tallus rod rated for 17-30lb test line.  This combination is capable of handling  sinkers and diamond jigs all the way up to 24oz. The super fast 6.2-1 retrieve ratio was a must given the extreme depths.  If you are not familiar with the great line of rods offered by Shimano, click here to learn more.  Click here to locate the Shimano dealer nearest to you. The terminal tackle consisted of either a 12-16 ounce hammered diamond jig or an 8-16oz cod bullet supplied by West End Tackle.  The cod bullet was tipped with one or more 4" strips of clam belly.  A 4ft long 80lb test Fluorocarbon leader attached the jig to a 230lb test Mustad Rolling Swivel swivel.  A dropper loop is added to the leader 6-12 inches below the swivel with a 6/0 Mustad beak baitholder hook (also baited with clam strips).  The main line was 40lb braided line.  If you would like to buy any of the tackle displayed on this page, click here to find a bait and tackle dealer near you.
Andy and Rich were wearing polarized sunglasses supplied by Azores Eyewear.  Finally someone has come out with a premium sunglass line at a reasonable price (less than $80).  The polarized lenses eliminate glare and allows anglers to spend long hours on the water without having to worry about headaches and eyestrain.  All models have 100% UVA and UVB protection.  Never settle for anything else.  No angler should be without these glasses.
